Tips for Minimizing OODAkit Airtime Usage

Devices access­ing the OODAkit and/or BGAN termi­nal SHOULD have automatic updates turned off.
Don’t incur signif­i­cant airtime charges download­ing updates for Microsoft or other appli­ca­tions unless critical!

For Efficient use of Satellite Airtime
Before connect­ing any portable comput­ing device to OODAkit’s Wi-Fi network:

• Turn off all Windows updates and other automatic software updates (go to Windows Control Panel/Security Center)
• Turn off automatic start of instant messag­ing, chat clients, and all other Web apps
• Set Web browser to not automat­i­cally download images (in Firefox: Tools/Options; in IE: Tools/Internet Options/Advanced)
• Set email client to access email manually, or to download headers only, and/or set file size very low (<30 KB) — see detailed instruc­tions below
• For smart­phones, consult your user manual to adjust maximum file sizes for automatic download to email
• If not access­ing email over smart­phone, disable account temporarily

Outlook Instructions
Download Headers Only
On the Tools menu, point to Send/Receive, point to Send/Receive Settings, and then click Define Send/Receive Groups.
Select the Send/Receive group that you want to modify, and then click Edit.
For any folder that you select to include in a send/receive, under Folder Options, select Download headers only.
Repeat the previ­ous step for each folder that is included in the send/receive.

Download Items and Attachments Smaller than a Specified Size
On the Tools menu, Send/Receive, Send/Receive Settings
Click Define Send/Receive Groups.Select the Send/Receive group that you want to modify, and then click Edit.
For any folder that you select to include in a send/receive, under Folder Options, select Download complete item includ­ing attach­ments.
Then select Download only headers for items larger than n KB.
Enter the maximum size of items that you want to download.
You can specify a size from 1 KB to 9999 KB. If an item is larger than the number you enter, only the header for the item is downloaded.
Repeat the previ­ous step for each folder that is included in a send/receive.
